I had my pre-op appointment for gastric sleeve surgery, and it was pretty uneventful other than my blood pressure being up from nerves. I went in with a list of questions, and he answered them 🙂 And I picked up my pre-op liquid diet shakes and post-op vitamins. We went over the procedure and post-op meal plans again, and I signed consent forms. Curious about my questions? Here they are:
Do I have to quit coffee for life? When I met with the dietitian, she told me to give up coffee, but I forgot to ask for how long. He said it is fine to resume once I’m good at getting in my liquids. Frankly, I’m enjoying tea so much that I may not go back, but it is nice to know I can if I want to.
Pain meds make me really constipated. What can I do proactively to avoid it? He OKayed taking colace in the am and pm starting the day after surgery. He said if it gets really bad to try magnesium citrate.
Will I have a drain? A few years ago I had an emergency appendectomy (fun!), and I had to have a drain for a long time afterwards. They’re gross and annoying. The doctor said that he quit using drains a few years ago. He also doesn’t do leak tests or xrays.
My biggest question was when can I start taking my prescription meds after surgery I take 2 for blood pressure (for now!), 2 for depression, and 1 for ADHD. I’m anxious to stay on my depression meds as much as I can for obvious reasons.
He said that I could start taking them right away. I brought the pills into my appointment so he could see their size, and he said that since they’re important meds for me I can take them. And I don’t have to crush them either! That would have been so disgusting…
In other news, I got my pre-op blood work done, and I’ve found chewable replacements for all the supplements and vitamins I take. Next up is some cooking and buying yogurt and other “full liquids.” It’s all go here at the Shrink Violet household!
Did you have a long list of questions like mine at your pre-op appointment? Did they all get answered?
