I’ve read that some gastric sleeve surgery centers require you to have a colonoscopy before surgery. Today I had one unrelated to my surgery – just because I turned the lucky age of 50 – and I thought I’d let you know how not-a-big-deal it is.
It sounds disgusting. I agree with that, but the actual process itself is a breeze.
The “prep” instructions differ by doctor, but mine had me drink 1L of this gross-tasting solution (Moviprep) at 6 the night before my procedure. I added one packet of True Lime Limeade to mine and chilled it for a few hours, and that made it drinkable. About an hour and a half later, the um, colon cleansing action started, but it wasn’t awful. Of course, I’d been on a liquid diet for about 5 days, so there wasn’t much to cleanse out.
The next morning at 6 I had to drink another liter of the solution, and an hour or so later the action started. In both cases I was in the bathroom less than 5 minutes.
Later that day I checked in for my colonoscopy, and after doing paperwork, answering a lot of questions, and getting an IV, the doctor came in. Turned out that she and I went to high school together! What a small world.
They wheeled me across the hall to the procedure room and gave me IV benadryl almost immediately. My vision went blurry and I got loopy. Then they gave me Versed and Fentanyl in my IV and… well, after that I only remember brief bits of what happened. They were nice enough to have a video screen where I could see what was going on, but I didn’t make much use of it. I kept falling asleep! Everyone was very professional, except me with my naked butt sticking out, and I wasn’t embarrassed at all.
When the procedure was over, the doctor came to tell me they found a polyp (a very common finding) and removed it. I’ll know in a week or two what it was. I had no pain, not even any discomfort at all. It was a little tricky getting my clothes back on as I was still pretty woozy, but that was the extent of my complications. (Underwear is tricky!)
My husband drove me home, I slept for an hour, and then got up to write this post. I feel great!
Have you ever had a colonoscopy? Were you required to get one before your gastric sleeve? Did you have a hard time, or was it easy-peasy like mine?
