Easy Weeknight Low-Calorie Cheeseburgers

Sometimes you want a burger, but it’s pouring out and you can’t grill, or you’re out of charcoal or gas, or you just plain don’t have the energy to do it. On those kinds of nights, I make cheeseburgers in my oven from frozen patties. Haters, back off! They come out great, and you have more time to spend with your family. Or Netflix. Or doomscrolling. I don’t judge…

Instructions

  • Heat oven to 450℉.
  • Line a rimmed half-sheet baking pan with foil, and place a half-sheet cooling rack on top.
  • Put the hamburger patties on the cooling rack and sprinkle them with the Montreal Steak Seasoning.
  • When the oven is ready to go, put the burger patties in the oven and cook for 18 minutes. This will leave them a little pink in the center. Add about 3 minutes for more well-done.
  • Take the patties out of the oven and cover each one with a slice of cheese. Put the buns on the cooling rack in the spaces between the patties, and heat it all for 2 more minutes. The cheese should be melted and the buns toasty.
  • Take the patties out of the oven and assemble the burgers.

Notes

Cheese: The calories for this recipe were calculated based on Kraft Deli Deluxe American cheese, but a good, sturdy cheddar would be fantastic as well.
Buns: I like Keto Culture’s keto hamburger buns. They’re 50 calories each and have a decent texture. You’re never going to think you’re eating a brioche bun, but they’re pretty good.
Condiments: For the calorie count I listed I assumed no condiments, but ketchup doesn’t add many calories. Especially if you choose Heinz No Sugar Ketchup which is only 3 calories per teaspoon. Mustard is usually 0 calories (check the label). Even light mayo isn’t that high.
Sides: I made this with Tater Tots and I had space for 9 in my calorie budget. I started them in the toaster oven at 450°F when I started cooking, and by the time the burgers were ready (about 25 minutes later) the tots were really crispy and crunchy. So good!
Toppings: Additions like tomatoes and onion are nice and low-calorie, so add away!

These burgers are easy to make in any quantity. You can fit about 6 on one half-sheet, so you’ll need to get another sheet and cooling rack to make more than 6 at a time. The cooling rack makes all the difference, by the way. When they cook directly on a baking sheet without a rack they just steam cook and come out… odd.

So give it a shot and let me know how it goes. I’m off to make myself a low-calorie dessert. Recipe to come!
